Part of a hotel’s back-of-house space, the knowledge room posed an interesting problem given its location in the basement. Designated as a space for employees to stay up to date with hotel standards, we wanted the employees to feel considered while keeping in mind the budget of a back-of-house space. Thus, we designed with restraint, allowing light and warmth to guide our design and material choices. While a coworker worked on the design intent, I focused on the execution. I researched and coordinated products and materials along with drafting all the plans, elevations, and details, allowing me to further develop the design to a level of construction.
Working from the design intent, I began to focus on separate components and sketch out options and details, allowing me to think through how materials and finishes would come together. The aim was to arrive at something which was visually appealing, but also simple to build, therefore reducing the cost of labor.
